Disabled Travel Enthusiasts Can Find Aids

April 14, 2010 by ama57

If you are disabled yourself, or have a loved one who is, you may have been thinking about the difficulties in trying to travel. If you have ever wondered if aids for disabled travelers exist, the answer is a qualified yes.

Airlines, for example, will normally offer services to help disabled passengers. However, it is the responsibility of the passenger to confirm what those services include. The traveler must also be sure to notify the airline ahead of time that they will be on board. Be very clear about exactly what your disability is, this is not the time to downplay your needs.

Airline services can include separate security check facilities, loan of a wheelchair and extra help to board and disembark, among others. In addition, disability aids such as wheelchairs are not normally counted towards the baggage count.

While many handicap accessible hotels have ramps and elevators for easy access, this needs to be checked before making your reservation. If they offer pick up from the airport, you will need to confirm that the shuttle is easily accessible for you or they should provide alternate means of transportation.

Some countries, like the United States, require access for the disabled. But not every destination will have that type of law. However, not all countries will have this requirement. If you are traveling elsewhere, there is even greater need to confirm all services and accessibility.

For mobility aids, such as wheelchairs, it is wiser to bring one from home rather than rent one at your destination. That way you know what you are getting and that it is something you can use. There are a variety of travel wheelchairs available, for example, that are much easier to stow than the normal variety.

Fortunately, there is more awareness in the travel industry of the needs of disabled travelers. Facilities, especially at tourist spots, are making themselves more accessible. You can even find travel agencies that devote themselves to disabled clients. These are probably a good place to start as they have already done the research in finding transportation and accommodations that are disabled friendly.

There are a number of websites that are dedicated to informing the disabled of places that are more friendly than others. You can also find a number of blogs for disabled travelers. These offer many personal tips to making your travel as best an experience as you can.

Disabilities do not have to keep you from making your dream trip. It may take a bit of patience, research and organization but you will find travel aids for disabled people to help before and during your trip. You can still make a travel dream come true.
