Gloucester Vacations: Things To See And Do When You Stay in Gloucester

October 31, 2008 by ama57 · Leave a Comment

The city of Gloucester is situated on the River Severn and is the 46th largest settlement in England. Certainly when it comes to Gloucester,

you’re sure to find plenty of
things to keep you occupied in the city and nearby.  A short drive from the city and you are soon in the Forest of Dean or looking at the views from atop the Malvern Hills. In the other direction you have the Cotswolds with its variety of quiet unspoilt villages, which you can visit.

Although the city is a port, the docks got neglected and then in the 1980’s the city
decided to renovate this area. There are plenty of riverside open spaces to wander around or you can visit one of the many shops in the docks area. And, as you’d expect, there are also plenty of bars where you can sit and enjoy some great drinks and food. One of the warehouses that are situated in this part of the city also houses the National Waterways Museum. Whilst in Custom House you will find a museum that is dedicated to the Soldiers of Gloucestershire.

A visit to the city wouldn’t be complete without seeing Gloucester Cathedral. This building has been a place of worship for more than thirteen hundred years. If you take the time to expore inside, you’ll be able to see its detailed architectural features and its cloisters are considered to be among the most beautiful in England today. If you find thinking that, you know this building from somewhere you almost certainly do as the cathedral has been used as a location for the Harry Potter movies.

Gloucester also has a large, central tranquil park. This can be found just a short stroll from the city center and was the first park to be developed. The park has lots of space to keep your children occupied and you to enjoy a picnic on a summers afternoon. There are many events which take place here during the summer months. A quick visit to the Park’s Information Office that is housed in a Tudor Cottage and will keep you informed about all the current events.

One more place that may well be of interest to you when you v is Blackfriars. This is the oldest surviving Dominican Priory in England.  Although it hasn’t been a friary since 1538, the buildings were then bought by Thomas Bell. He then spent money converting the church into a home and the remainder of the building was turned into a factory where his cloth could be made. If you time your visit well, you may be able to take one of the guided tours offered by English Heritage.

You can get a list of places to stay in Gloucester here.

What To See And Do When You Stay In Colchester

October 31, 2008 by ama57 · Leave a Comment

Colchester is the largest of all the settlements in the County of Essex in England. The town actually claims to be the oldest one in Britain and is definitely the oldest recorded Roman settlement in the country. Because of its history, there are lots of attractions in Colchester, which one can enjoy whilst visiting the town. In this article, we look at just a few which may be worth considering visiting when you visit Colchester.

1.  Balkerne Gate – The most complete Roman gateway in the country and is believed to have been built at around 55AD. It was originally actually the main way that visitors would enter the town but over time was then transformed into a triumphal arch instead. Then after this, it became part of the town’s new walls before it was blocked up some four hundred years later in 465AD to help improve the town’s defence system. The actual gate itself was only uncovered some 100 years ago and this is why it has remained in such good condition that you see today.

2.  Charter Market – The oldest recorded market in the United Kingdom has been run here for more than 800 years now. The market was granted a Royal Charter in 1189 by King John and is where it gets its name from. You can still find a market at Charter Market twice a week, on Fridays and Saturdays and there is a wider than normal variety of goods as the charter prevents more than one stall selling the same item.

3.  Colchester Castle – Altough “only” dating back to Norman times, this castle was built on the same ground as the Temple to Claudius in Roman times. But, the Roman temple was smashed to pieces in 60 AD as part of Queen Boudica’s campaign to force the Romans to leave Britain. The actual stone that was used by the Normans to build the castle is in fact much of the materials used to build the Roman temple.

This castle now has one of the oldest and largest of all castle keeps in the whole of Europe and inside the walls of the castle there are lots of things to see and do. The castle houses exhibitions, tracing more than two thousand years of British history and there are displays that one can interact with as well. Whilst touring the castle you can learn more about Matthew Hopkins the Witch finder General who used the castle as a jail at the time of the main witch trials.

4.  Colchester Zoo – This is one of the finest zoos to be found in Europe today and is only a short drive from the town itself. Located in around sixty acres of English countryside the zoo has more than 200 species of animal for you to look at. Naturally, the elephants can be found in Elephant Kingdom, and Chimp World is home to the zoo’s chimpanzees. Plus you will find other parts of the zoo just as enjoyable and enchanting. As with any zoo, you’ll almost certainly find yourself spending lots of time here.

Holidays in Brighton are popular with not only people in the United Kingdom but those visitors from around the world also. Perched on the south coast of England, this town is one of the biggest of all the settlements to be located by the sea in the UK.

It was originally called Brighthelmston and can trace it’s roots back in time - even earlier than 1086 of the Domesday Book. That said, its importance as a health resort only came to the fore in the 18th Century. It started to become more popular with people thinking about spending a day by the seaside with the first rail link in 1841. This is a place where many of the aristocracy of the 18th and 19th Centuries would spend time together.

In fact, when you look back in history during the 16th Century Brighton was only a tiny fishing village with around 1,500 residents, dotted around in small cottages. You can still discover a few of these buildings which you can find in The Lanes. The 1600’s saw quite a large change because a doctor by the name of Richard Russell from the nearby town of Lewes began to talk about the health benefits of using seawater for treating glandular diseases.

After 1750 the town began to fill with people wishing to try out the water to see if it really could help them. The town also became popular when the UK royalty came to try the sea waters and even to bathe themselves.

Each year now the town has more than 8 million visitors to it and they enjoy everything that this coastal town has to offer. Accommodation in the town span the complete range from total luxury to medium and lower priced hotels. There are also lots of fantastic guesthouses and B&B accommodation which offer you a much more friendly and personal touch.

Once in Brighton there is plenty for you to see and do from spending time wandering around the streets. Or a stroll along the historic promenade and you will come to the Palace Pier and the Royal Pavilion both of which are places worth a visit. Certainly, the you should include the Royal Pavilion on your itinerary.

Called a folly this building was created by the Prince of Wales who later became King George IV. He was well known for his flamboyancy and eccentric ways but the building he created still remains as a reminder of a bygone era although Brighton has long since been host to many tourists.

Along with the more traditional attractions, you’d expect to see in a prestigious UK seaside resort, Brighton is also host to a myriad of cultural events every year too. Certainly, the seafront is now full of amusement arcades plus souvenir shops but delve deeper and you’re bound to find something that really makes people enjoy coming to this town.

When it comes to holidays in Brighton you’ll be pleasantly surprised at all the different things to see and do here.

Medan City

How much to tip in Medan

Before we get into tipping, you may want to know the value of your money in Medan Indonesia, no not just the exchange rates.

Minimum Wage in Medan

This is a guide to the value of money in Medan. The standard minimum wage in Medan is roughly Rp980.000 a month which is around Rp38.000 (USD 4.00 ) a day. Some smaller retail and service industry even pays lower than minimum salary of Rp500.000 / month. So you can measure how much your tips are worth.

There are many times, tourists are the victims of extortion in Indonesia, hence, takes extra precaution. The amount of Rp 50.000 is a big sum as tips in Indonesia, hence do not fall into the trap.

Tipping at Restaurants & Hotels
Many restaurants and Hotels inn Medan have the standard 10% service charge plus tax directly charged to your bill. So technically, you are not required to give any extra.
Nevertheless, if you are feeling well served and generous, you may want to give extra tips to the waiters or waitresses.
There are no hard and fast rules on how much to tip in Medan compared to USA where 25% of your bill is expected.

For restaurants, the standard tipping is around Rp 5.000 to Rp 10.000. You may give more if you bring more guests. Rp20.000 should be a big tip.
Hotel porters and bellboys, probably the same aroung Rp5.000 to Rp10.000 depending on the amount of luggages you have for them to help you with.

Tour & Tour Guide
If you took a cheap vacations package to Medan, you may be faced with Tour Guides: I would suggests Rp 50.000 each, for the driver and the guide ( for private tours ). This is based on the standard 3D2N tours. If you feel that you would like to show your appreciation, then really it’s up to each individual. If you are traveling on a group tour, then this should be optional.

Taxi Driver:
This is not expected. But sometimes due to the limited amount of change Indonesia such as the Rp100, Rp500 coins. You may just let them keep the change.

Airport:
Although it is clearly stated that the porter charges Rp 2.000 for each bag, many expect more of about Rp5.000 for each bag now (yes they will ask for more).
So be prepared. There was once, I was feeling generous and gave Rp20.000 for 3 bags and they still ask for more!
You will need the help of the porter if you have many luggages.

Remember, tipping in Medan City should be based on your own appreciation of service you received and your own financial ability. The amount stated here is just a general guide.

Carlisle Vacations: Things To See And Do When You Visit Carlisle

October 28, 2008 by ama57 · Leave a Comment

The city of Carlisle is the largest of all settlements that you will find in Cumbria, England. Along with being the administrative centre for the city and the County of Cumbria, it also houses the main campus for the University of Cumbria. Carlisle vacations are ideal for those who would like to discover more about this historic city.

It’s really easy to get to Carlisle from almost anywhere in the UK. The city is well linked with the rest of the country. The M6 motorway provides easy access to the South of England whilst the M74 motorway provides good links with Scotland. However, actually getting around the city itself in a car can prove quite eventful especially when the rush hours are in full flow.

If you’re not going to drive to the city, then there are plenty of regular train services that are direct to the railway station. Trains not only arrive from London, but also from Newcastle, Leeds and Glasgow. That said, the line from Glasgow actually travels through Dumfries on its journey.

Once you’ve reached the city for your vacation or business trip, you’ll find lots of things to see and do. The main attractions of course being its Castle and its Cathedral.

The castle has been situated at the Western end of the city on the Anglo Scottish border for more than 900 years. Since it was first built, it has been witness to many conflicts and sieges and yet today you can explore the chambers, stairways and dungeons that remain. The legendary “Licking Stones” can be found in the dungeons. Legend has it that Jacobite prisoners were so thirsty that they would lick the stones in an effort to get some water to help keep them alive.

As for the Cathedral this was founded in 1122 and remains a dominate feature of the city’s skyline when you look from anywhere across the city. Not only is beautifully decorated but a visit down into the crypt and you will find a display which looks at more than a 1,000 years of Christian history relating to the county of Cumbria.

However, if you are looking for a little more excitement when visiting Carlisle then a day or an evening at the races should be considered. The racecourse is located on the outskirts of the town and is set in beautiful countryside and this is why the course undulates somewhat. Throughout the year top quality horse racing events take place with the National Hunt ones taking place between September and April and the flat races taking place between April and August.

Carlisle vacations are ideal for those who are looking for a quiet romantic time away with their partner. But they are also the place for families who are looking for a little adventure and fun during their Carlisle holiday.
