Where to Spend This Year’s Passover

February 28, 2009 by ama57 · Leave a Comment

Passover is seen as the birth of the Jewish community as it is the event that succeeded the Israelites’ long journey through the vast desert to Israel. It is on this occasion that the Pharaoh freed them and allowed them out of Egypt thousands of years ago. Because of its biblical and historical significance, the Passover is one of the most important holy days for the Jewish and Samaritan communities. Year after year, the members of the said communities celebrate the freedom of the Jewish people from the Egyptians through the Passover holiday. The holiday is usually celebrated during the spring. It also acts a reminder to the community that new things are coming during the season.

The Passover holiday usually lasts seven days in Israel and eight days in the rest of the world. The length of the festival is seen as a great opportunity to go out for an authentic Jewish travel experience that thousands of Jews seize. Year after year, Jews from all over the globe seek for the best Passover vacation that they can go to. Because the holiday is very important for every Jew, many of them make sure that they finalize their Passover vacation plans months ahead. For those who have not yet made plans for the holiday, however, it is not too late! There are still a lot of Passover tour ideas you can explore.

Typically, Passover tours take between a week to ten days. Many Jews certainly take this opportunity to relax, unwind and enjoy all the best things that one can expect from a kosher resort. At the same time, they take this ten-day vacation as a means to detach themselves from the stress, responsibilities and challenges that everyday life brings, and surround themselves with the tranquility that one needs to celebrate the festival and practice the Jewish traditional obligations.

There are many kosher resorts all over the world that prepare for the arrival of Passover holidaymakers. Some are even located at the most exotic travel destinations that one can ever think of. The purpose of this seclusion from the sights and sounds of the urban environment is to allow every Passover vacation-goer to get close to nature and appreciate its rich pristine beauty. Nature never fails to attract travelers. That being said, one of the top pick spot in the world is a Passover resort in Costa Rica. You are going to experience nature at its finest. You will have the opportunity to have close encounters with wildlife in their natural habitat, meet indigenous people and learn their cultures, and roam around the land that our ancestors have walked on. All this can be experienced during the Chol Hamoed. Naturalist tour guides will give you amazing three days of your Passover vacation by roaming around the abundance of nature. Fine beaches, rain and cloud forests, verdant natural tropical surroundings, endangered species – what more can you ask for to make your Passover travel experience perfect?

Jewish holidays like Rosh Hashana and Passover are strictly observed in the kosher resorts in Costa Rica and around the world. The idea is to allow the vacation-goers to observe their religious obligations for the specific occasion. During the entire period of the Passover holiday, the resorts are exclusively kosher and are closed to the general public.

During the initial two nights of the Passover vacations, the Passover resort in Costa Rica and other kosher accommodations host Seders to the guests. The Seders are usually served in the main dining area of the resort. There are also communal Seders that visitors can join. This is to allow them not only to practice their religious traditions, but also to meet their Jewish brothers and sisters who are also celebrating the Passover holiday in the resort. For those who wish to observe their religious obligations in private, however, there are some resorts that offer private Seders. Whether you wish to spend your Seders with the group or in private, you are sure to enjoy them with the relaxing sounds of the waves crashing, the hum of exotic birds nearby and the mimicking howls of the monkeys that surround the resort in Costa Rica. In addition, kosher resorts also have onsite synagogues during the Passover for the daily Minyanim.

Food is a great part of a travel destination’s cultural wealth. Spending the Passover in Costa Rica gives you the chance to experience its local cuisine. The menus served are incorporated with the glatt kosher standards. This is to make sure that the meals not only feeds your mouth, but also your soul. Pesach meals are prepared under the strict supervision of mashgichim before they are served. A thorough inspection is conducted before the meals are prepared. Every produce and ingredient that make up the sumptuous meals that you are about to partake are surveyed. This is to make sure that you are served only the Pesach meals of the highest standards.

Florida Keys with Kids: Fun Things to Do

February 27, 2009 by ama57 · Leave a Comment

There’s really something unique about the Florida Keys. Visit once and you’ll know there’s a reason Ernest Hemingway lived in the Keys.

The Keys are an incredible place to spend some time if you want to hit the beach but you don’t want to deal with huge tourist crowds. They’re also a wonderful place if you want to spend some time at gorgeous old bars and inns, without having to worry about getting a headache from the legions of noisy weekend revellers.

In terms of culture and climate, it’s somewhere between a charming, rustic American town, and the relaxing, scenic appeal of a beach resort destination in the Caribbean.

Sounds like a great place, doesn’t it? For adults, anyway.

It’s not exactly Disneyland, but fear not! You can totally take a trip to the Florida keys without boring your kids to tears. The Keys are definitely a laid back part of the country, but really, a lot of the attractions strike a perfect balance between relaxing and fun. You won’t get bored, but you won’t get a headache, either.

So here are just a few of the cool things you can do in the Keys without boring your kids half to death.

Mallory Square

Something of a Key West tradition: At dusk every day, visitors and locals alike gather at the seaside Mallory Square to watch the breathtaking sunset and enjoy the entertainment of street performers. The beauty of nature, some entertainment, and nobody walking around with a giant Mickey Mouse head on their shoulders.

Charters
There are a lot of charter tours in the Keys, in fact, far too many to ever list here. You can take Danger Charters and take a look at the sharks and wildlife of the area, or you can take Easy Day charters for fishing, snorkeling, and even, hopefully, some dolphin sightings.

Hemingway Home and Museum
Your kids might not be so into The Old Man and the Sea just yet, but you can go to appreciate all the stories and artifacts that really bring literary history to life, and your kids can enjoy the six-toed cats, descended directly from the cats owned by Hemingway himself.

When your kid is asking for Six Flags and you tell him that you’re going to some place in Florida he’s never heard of, he probably won’t be too thrilled at first, but rest assured, the Keys really are a great place to take your whole family. You get the laid back atmosphere of a real grown up vacation, but with a degree of entertainment and excitement that the kids will love.

Mysterious Holidays in Turkey

February 27, 2009 by ama57 · Leave a Comment

Visit two continents in one trip by doing your holiday in wonderful Turkey. Straddling Europe and Asia, a small part of the country’s land (Thrace) is in Europe, while the larger part is what was formerly known as Asia Minor or Anatolia. The unique distinction makes Turkey an excellent tourist destination, as the blend of East and West as well as the succession of great empires that ruled its territories left a rich, diverse heritage. Similarly, the largest city and former capital, Istanbul, is the only major city in the world that is situated in two continents. Ranked third best city in Europe, Istanbul is home to magnificent monuments of the past glory, like the Hippodrome, Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi and Dolmabahçe Palaces, Galata Tower, Chora Church and Basilica Cistern. It also offers contemporary attractions, such as the Miniaturk, Museum of Archeology, and the lovely Bosphorus shoreline village of Ortaköy, where the artists and literati converge.

After journeying through Istanbul, it’s time you head to the other fabulous destinations of Turkey. Visit Ankara and see relics of empires that once ruled the nation. The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in the Ankara Castle has a rich collection of artefacts on display, while the Mustafa Kemal Atatürk mausoleum called Anitkabir exhibits a collection of Atatürk memorabilia. Near the capital is the moonscaped Cappadocia region, where one is transported, literally, to a fairy tale world. Walking through the Cappadocian cities of Göreme, Uçhisar and Nevsehir lets you see the Fairy Chimneys and rock houses up close, as well as exploring underground cities, monasteries and temples used by early Christians fleeing persecution. To really appreciate the beauty of the region, hot-air balloon tours are available for those wishing to view the natural formations from above, while adventurous types can stay in one of the several cave houses converted into first-class hotels.

A fitting finale for your Turkey holiday is a visit to the Turkish Riviera. The country’s Turquoise Coast compares well with other beach destinations elsewhere in the Mediteranean, with sandy beaches, beautiful landscapes and lively nightlife. The resort city of Antalya is the hub in this region, as one gets to the smaller seaside cities like Kemer, Ölüdeniz and Fethiye from it. In Antalya, one can see ancient ruins and modern malls, monuments dating back from prehistoric times like the Hadrian’s Gate and Hidirlik Tower, and  beaches like Konyaalti and Lara. South of Antalya is the town of Demre (ancient town of Myra) which is where St. Nicholas of Myra - the original Santa Claus - lived. Demre also has Lycian rock tombs in the cliff sides and Roman ruins. For some adventure, venture into the town of Olimpos, where spartan accommodations in tree house style bungalows, isolated beach area that require traversing through ruins, and lively backpackers’ bars welcome visitors. In the neighboring village of Cirali you get to witness the eternal flame of Chimera on the hillside - just one more mystery in  your fairytale journey in Turkey.

Overseas Holidays are Suffering

February 26, 2009 by ama57 · Leave a Comment

Whenever anyone thinks of a destination they think about the heat, sea and sand at an overseas place. Britain’s spend millions of there hard earned cash every year to give to the overseas tourism industry. But that was until now, things look to be getting better for the UK holiday industry this year as most Brits will be staying onshore due to the power of the Euro and the credit crunch.

More than 50% of Brits are trying to save themselves cash by going to a UK destination for their holidays. But more than sixty percent of Brits said they were unable to give up totally going on holiday, because they need the break and a moment to relax so they are just trying to keep costs down by visiting the UK.

Caravan holidays places have had to promptly employ more staff due to the full increase in these types of holidays. Places such as Haven and Butlins are cashing in on the credit crunch. UK coach operators should also be set for the summer as it is certain they will see a huge increase in bookings.

Evidence has also come to light that customers have cut back on aeroplane travel. Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted together saw a drop of two.8% last year compared with 2007, with Stansted seeing the biggest drop, 6%.

An Abta spokesman said: “People are still booking holidays abroad but in the last few weeks our members have reported that holidaymakers are cutting back and opting for self-catering and all-inclusive holidays.”

So it just goes to show you that when one industry suffers, such as travelling abroad another industry emerges triumphs. Maybe the credit crunch is positive in some aspects as it will filter out all of the companies that are under performing and just not giving good enough products, leaving room in saturated markets to see a new section of successful start-up businesses.

Weather From Russia but Not Much Love

Snow Causes Traffic Chaos Across Britain

Severe weather in the UK has caused complete disruption of transport systems with many cancellations of trains, buses and flights. And forecasters have warned that more heavy snow is set to hit the British shores as the UK endures its coldest winter for 13 years.

Met office forecasters have warned that snowstorms from Russia, currently brewing over the north sea, will bring even more freezing temperatures, biting winds and even more heavy snow. While the weather may be seen to improve for a while more heavy snow is predicted for the rest of the week across the UK.

The Automobile Association have warned people that their cars are not overcoats. If they break down or if the road ahead is blocked they will need to leave their vehicles and must make certain that they are wearing appropriate cold weather clothing, else they will risk hypothermia.

London and the Southeast of England have experienced the heaviest snow falls in the region for 20 years. London mayor, Boris Johnson, was forced to shut down the whole of the London bus network due to the effects of the severe winter weather. Disruption to public transport has led many people to work at home and numerous schools are still closed.

The worst snowstorm to hit London for 20 years has resulted in the cancellation of hundreds of flights from Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton. The closure of one of Heathrow airport’s busy runways has led to more than 650 flight cancellations. The outlook for travellers this week continues to look uncertain as forecasters predict even more severe weather.

The cancellation of many trains and buses is leading many to attempt to get to the airports by car. Freezing conditions are making driving treacherous, particularly on untreated local roads and hills. The roadsides are littered with abandoned vehicles, some blocking carriageways.

Anyone who is expecting to fly from Heathrow or Gatwick is advised to contact the airport before setting off. And if you are planning to take your car to the airport be sure to pre-book your Heathrow parking or Gatwick parking space in advance to be certain of a place.

The current Highways agency advice is: ‘if your journey isn’t vital, stay at home’.

Safe Drinking Water - Six Tips For Backpacking

February 23, 2009 by ama57 · Leave a Comment

On a day hike, safe drinking water isn’t an issue. You can carry what you need. But when backpacking, you will most likely be using chemical water purification or filters to resupply yourself using natural sources of water. Both of these can fail at times. A filter can break or get clogged, and pills can be lost, damaged, or just not effective if the water you start with is too murky.

What you need then, if you want to be fully prepared when entering the wilderness, is a little knowledge, just in case. You need to know how to find safe drinking water, or make it. Here are some tips to remember.

Safe Drinking Water Tips

1. Use your map. See if there are farms or grazing lands or campgrounds upstream from where you are collecting your water. If so, be sure to boil it or use a heavier-than-normal dose of whatever chemical disinfectant you are using. Better yet, collect water somewhere else.

2. Use glacial melt water. If you collect water that is running out from under a glacier or is still near the glacier that it melted from, it is more likely to be safe. No guarantee, but in an emergency, it is likely  better than the water from a cow pasture. If you have chemical purification tablets or a filter, it is more easily purified than muddy water (but allow lots of time for chemical purification of cold water).

3. Look at the surface. If there is a rainbow-colored sheen to the water, it may be toxic. If the color is from natural bacteria which are generally harmless, it will usually break apart when you poke a stick into it. If it doesn’t, it may be petroleum-based, and should be avoided.

4. Smell the foam. Foam on water can be from industrial pollution or detergents, in which case it isn’t really safe drinking water. But if the foam separates easily when disturbed and smells earthy, it is probably natural foam created by the plants in the water and the agitation of the current or waterfalls. In that case it does not indicate toxicity.

5. Look around. If you are near trail crossings or places where people camp, try to collect your water upstream of these areas. If it is a short walk, you may also want to get above any meadow where animals graze.

6. Treat clear water. If the water is murky, your filter may clog or your chemical treatment may not be effective. To solve this problem, let the water settle for a while in any container you have, and then pour off the clearer water after the dirt settles out. You can also strain water through a bandana or t-shirt to get the big stuff out.

In any case, look for the clearest water that is furthest from sources of contamination. Filter, treat with chemicals, boil, or take your chances. Safe drinking water is a necessity, so plan ahead.
