Eureka Springs, Arkansas a history

Men were first lured by the crystal clear waters of the spring to the hills of the Arkansas Ozarks. The Osage Indians reportedly first found the spring and used its healing powers. The legend of the curing waters soon spread. The first white man to discover the spring was Dr. Jackson. Alvah Jackson reportedly found the spring in 1854. This could have been a minor note in Arkansas folkfore but soon became the start of the greatest boom towns in Arkansas history.

During a hunting trip to the area in 1858, Dr. Jackson’s son had an accident which caused a painful inflammations of the eyes. Dr. Jackson had his son wash his eyes from the water in the spring in what is now Basin Spring. His condition improved in a few days. Dr. Jackson believed in the curative powers of the spring water. He started bottling the spring water and sold it as “Dr. Jackson’s Eye Water”. Soon word of mouth spread thru Arkansas and the surrounding states.

During the Civil War, Dr. Jackson frequently treated sick and wounded soldiers from both armies. Dr. Jackson was a southern sympathizer and nursed confederate soldiers in 1865. The confederate troops had to hide in the mountains because the area was controlled by Federal troops. The confederate soldiers camped out in the hills above the spring. In a few months the soldiers were reported to be completely recovered.

The medicinal benefits of the springs were not reported again until May of 1879. Judge Saunders of the County Court was soon introducted to the water by Dr. Jackson. Judge Saunders was suffering from erysipelas or a bacterial skin infection. Judge Saunders felt completely restored after losing 33 pounds in just 5 weeks. It was also reported that his hair returned to its original color of black.

No one knows whether the spring waters had any actual therapeutic properties at that time. No chemical difference has been found between the water in Eureka Springs and water in other parts of Northwest Arkansas. Regardless, a legend was born.

In 1879, about 50 people lived and camped around the spring. Dr. Jackson reportedly stated that a town would grow here and it needs a name. Discussions followed as to naming the town. People suggested the town be named after the two most famous men in the area; Jackson Springs or Saunders Springs. Then someone suggest “Eureka” meaning “I have found it”. This name was agreed upon as neither man wanted the town named for them. The name of Eureka Springs as agreed upon. The City of Eureka Springs was founded on July 4, 1879.

As word of Eureka’s miraculous, healing waters began to spread, thousands of visitors flocked to the original encampment of tents and hastily built shanties swelling the population to over 10,000. In less than 1 year, the healing waters would bring 25,000 people to this spot. The economy of Eureka Springs sprang up around the spring water. This is why Eureka is often called “The City That Water Built”. The springs brought in tourists as well as people with health afflictions with the result that hotels, saloons, bathhouses, dry goods stores, groceries and liveries soon sprang up. Hill people soon arrived from hundreds of miles away with loads of eggs, ducks and geese to sell. Then the Railroad came.

In 1881 there were 13 buildings called hotels catering to the growing tourist population. Local newspapers in 1882 reported that the Eureka Springs, Arkansas water was “deliciously pure and sweet”. A large variety of massage services are still offered today to visitors of Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
